WhatsApp to introduce “WhatsApp Payments” via UPI
- WhatsApp payment option to be available soon..
- The feature has already been spotted in the beta version
- WhatsApp will allow users to make bank to bank transfer via UPI
What is UPI?
UPI is a payment system that allows you to transfer money between any two parties. So it’s like NEFT/RTGS/IMPS? Kinda, except it’s far more well defined and standardized across banks, which means you can initiate a bank account transfer from anywhere with a few clicks.
WhatsApp has long been reported to be working on integrating a UPI-based mobile payments system in the popular messaging app. Now it seems its 200 million users in India may not have to wait too long to get the feature, which will allow you to transfer money to your friends and family with a few taps. The WhatsApp UPI integration has been spotted in the beta version of the Android app. The UPI payment page is hidden in the WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.17.285, according to blog WABetaInfo; the opt-in feature will allow for instant payments as UPI works on IMPS protocol.
The world’s most-popular messaging application WhatsApp has received permission from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to enter into partnership with multiple banks to allow users to make in-app payments and money transfers using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
UPI enables account-to-account transfers from a mobile app without having any details of the beneficiary’s bank.
